Linksys 4-Port Router Description
Linksys RV042 4-Port VPN Router
The Linksys 10/100 4-Port VPN Router is an advanced Internet-sharing network solution for your small business needs. Like any router, it lets multiple computers in your office share an Internet connection. But the unique dual Internet ports on the 10/100 4-Port VPN Router let you connect a second Internet line as a backup to insure that you're never disconnected. Or, use both Internet ports at the same time, and let the router balance your office's requirements between them for maximum bandwidth efficiency.
The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router also features a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch to connect four PCs directly, or you can connect more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need.
The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet, and has IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

Linksys 4-Port Router Reviews

Bought Linksys 4-Port Router to give employees remote access using the quick vpn client software. I'm not a tech guy or network nerd but I set up my office network, do a little programming (for my business) and have built a lot of systems. The router aspect of Linksys 4-Port Router unit is a no brainer. The VPN server aspect is easy enough once you figure out how to do it. The included instructions are not really instructive. Setting up a VPN connection is apparently one of the last great secrets of personal computing. I spent hours googling to finally scrape together enough info to get the VPN working. I got every XP system (home and pro) to connect. Can't get Vista systems to work (I can establish the tunnel and connect to the remote system but then the internet connection is dropped). So in my experience, this does not play well with Vista (big surprise). Otherwise it works pretty well and you get an education. Unless you know what you're doing, you will not get this working right out of the box.

I've set up a lot of VPN routers and I thought it would be a snap. I created a small network with two of these routers connected through a switch with WAN ports on the same subnet, set everything up and... the VPN would connect but no traffic flow. After hours of trial and error, I connected it to a network with a router (default route available) et voila, worked. First time I have seen two devices on the same subnet unable to communicate without the router present. Silly, non standard design if you ask me. Wish I could have my time back.

Replaced the Netgear FVS318 with this router and was really impressed with the performance improvement. But lets start at the beginning. Installation was as snap as all it took was taking it out of the box, connecting the cable modem and PCs. I've just started playing with the features but the menus are pretty clear and navigating simple. The performance was excellent and I am seeing a five fold increase in throughput over the Netgeat box.

Got this in order to connect to a small, two machine office from home. Setup was painless and the VPN worked correctly right off the bat. Remote Desktop sessions work error free, as do PC anywhere sessions from an old Win2000 notebook. Thus far, totally reliable.

I have set up many of ipsec and pptp vpn networks. I have never the amount of issues as i have had with this rv042. I cant get RDC, radmin, remote desktop or other vpn applications to run. The configuration is awkward and confusing. Don't go cheap, get a better vpn router.
